Cargo bikes

There are different versions of cargo bikes. At the bicycle library, we have one cargo bike that we have studied more closely.
Cargo bikes as a mode of transport
A cargo bike is a three- or four-wheeled bicycle with a platform in the front. It is built to transport goods, children and other cargo and is today especially popular among families with children.

Cargo bikes can motivate the users to cycle more often and to drive less
The users who have borrowed a cargo bike from the bicycle library have expanded their transport options. As many as 49% of the users find that cargo bikes solve a transport need, they otherwise had to solve with a car or courier. 20% of the users say that they would cycle more if they had a similar bicycle, and 10% would drive less in a car.

A study made in connection with ‘Copenhagen Bicycle Strategy 2011-2025’ shows that there are several people who have a daily transport distance between 2 and 10 km, but who choose the car as a mode of transport. The bicycle library’s study shows the cargo bicycle is seen as a competitive alternative to the car that has the potential to get more people to ditch the car and rather cycle shorter distances below 10 km. A full 70% of the users who have borrowed a bicycle, have had great or good experience. That the cargo bicycle both can be used to transport children and goods is also good for transport. But not for long distances. In contrast to the other popular bicycle types in the library, the majority of the patrons of a carrier cycle less than 10 km. 40% have driven a distance of 5-10 km, and 34% between 0-5 km.
61% of the borrowers experience the cargo bikes rideability as great or good, and 60% experience the safety as safe. By extension to this, about half of the users are considering buying a similar bicycle after trying a cargo bike.

Cargo bicycles are good to transport children and products

Yes - used it to transport things / relocation, and it solved the task great
(Female, 26-35 years)

Most borrowers find that the cargo bicycles are good for transporting children or to carry things and products.

I was transporting my brothers around Copenhagen a whole weekend. It was faster, cheaper and more fun than public transport (Male, 18-25 years)

My mother was very happy to try to ride a bicycle, where the balance was not an issue.
(Female, 26-35 years)

The users describe the cargo bike as a bicycle with a lot of space, which is practical and has good balance. The cargo bike has thus in most cases lived up to the expectations of users.

Cumbersome and heavy, but practical
Some users have not had a good experience on the cargo bike, as they have experienced that it is heavy and difficult to ride on, especially at longer distances. A few users have also experienced the platform as something unstable and hard to cycle on. This makes some users not to want the cargo bike as a mode of transport. Dissatisfaction is not necessarily due to the cargo bike as a concept, but more to the limitation of each model the bicycle library has available.

No, this type of bicycle is not necessary in my daily life, but it would be nice to have standing to use specific tasks.
 Shipping, excursions, etc.
(Male, 18-25 years)

These users also admit that although the cargo bike does not fit into their daily needs it would be handy to have access to.

Other users point out that the cargo bike would be relevant in the future, once they have children. The price is mentioned several times by the users as a barrier to buying a bike.
