The Most Popular Bicycles

The bicycle library’s questionnaire shows that the possibility to borrow a bicycle from the library has the potential to change the user's mobility habits. The potential lies in the fact that the bicycles in the library seem to cover other needs and offer some new transportation options other than a regular bicycle.

We have identified the 5 most popular bicycle categories, and looked more closely at how the users have experienced them and how the bicycles can change a users mobility habits.

The selected bicycle categories are: 1. Electric bicycle/ pedelec, 2. Electric-assist Long John, 3. Recumbent, 4. Cargo bike and 5. The velomobile

The Electric Bicycle

It's fun and different to ride. Just as expected.
(Male, 18-25 years old) 

46 people have over the past year borrowed an electric bicycle. Did you know that most of the people who have borrowed a electric bicycle think that it is a fantastic* experience to ride, that it lends well to longer distances over 10 km, and that it motivates to cycle more and longer distances? This is what our questionnaire from the bicycle library can document.

The use and experience on the electric bicycle:

  • 85% of the users have cycled between 10-20 km and between 20-50 km
  • 70% of the users have had a great and positive experience
  • 76% of the users find/experience the driveability as good and ok
  • 94% of the users experience the security as safe and very safe

  • Is fun and different to drive on
  • The electric slide is a good help, especially uphill and against wind
  • Is not always practical for storage
  • The battery life will in some cases have limits for how far the electric motor can run

The electric bicycle gives the user new transport options:

  • 31% of the users would cycle more if they had had an electric bicycle
  • 28% of the users would cycle longer if they had had an electric bicycle
  • 14% of borrowers report that the electric bicycle solves a transport need they otherwise had to solve by car or courier.

  • Half of the users are considering buying a similar bicycle after trying the electrical bicycle

The Electric-assist Long John

Use the comfortable electric bicycle to move the comfortable car driver to the electric bicycle
(Male, 56-65 years old) 

During the past year 39 users have borrowed an electric Long John. The majority of the users find the electric Long John an fantastic* cycling experience, that it is suitable for long distances over 20 km, that it is good to carry cargo and children, and that it motivates the borrowers to cycle more and drive less. This is what our questionnaire from the bicycle library shows.

Use and experience of the electrical Long John

  • 51% of users cycled between 20-50 km and 50 km
  • 79% of users had a great and positive experience
  • 92% of users experienced driveability as great or good
  • 84% of users experienced the safety level as “very safe” or “safe”

  • Fast, practical, fun and effortless to get around within the city
  • Price may be a barrier for purchase

El-Long John gives the user new transport options:

  • 36% of borrowers would cycle more
  • 15% of borrowers would drive less
  • 27% of readers say that an electric Long John solves a transport need they otherwise would have to solve by car / transport

  • The majority of the users are considering buying a similar bicycle after trying an electric Long John

The Recumbent

You have to get used riding it, but it is a great riding experience
 (Male, 36-45 years old)

33 people have borrowed a recumbent during the past year. Most of the people who have borrowed a recumbent have expressed that it is a good* experience to ride, that it lends itself well to long distances over 20 km, and that it motivates the borrowers to cycle more and longer distances. These results are based upon the bicycle library’s questionnaire.

Use and experience of the recumbent

  • 57% of the users have cycled between 20-50 km and 50 km
  • 70% of the users experience the driveability as good and great
  • 64% of the users experience the safety as ok and safe
  • 79% of the users have had a good and amazing experience

  • Is comfortable and good to ride on, especially in headwind
  • Requires adaptation of the muscles you use to cycle with
  • Can in some cases be perceived as heavy, inconvenient and uncomfortable to ride in heavy traffic for inexperienced riders.

The recumbent gives the user new transport options:

  • 36% of borrowers would ride longer
  • 21% of borrowers would cycle more

  • A third of the users are considering buying a similar bicycle after trying a recumbent.

The Cargo bike

I could carry my brothers around Copenhagen a whole weekend. It was faster, cheaper and more fun than public transport
(Male, 18-25 years)

During the past year, 30 users have borrowed a cargo bike. According to the bicycle library’s questionnaire, most of the users say that a cargo bike is an fantastic*  experience to run on, that it is practical to use in the city and that it  is best suited for short distances below 10 km. 

The use and experience on the cargo bike:

  • 74% of the users have cycled a longest distance of 0-5 km and 5-10 km
  • 61% of the users experience the rideability as good and great
  • 67% of the users experience the safety as safe and very safe
  • 70% have had a good and amazing experience

  • Is good to transport children and to carry things and products
  • Can sometimes be perceived as heavy and difficult to ride on

The cargo bike has given the users new transport options:

  • 49% of the users believe that the cargo bicycle solves a transport need they otherwise had to solve by car / carrier
  • 20% of the users would cycle more
  • 10% of the users would use the car less

  • Half of the users considering buying a similar bicycle after trying a cargo bike

The Velomobile

This rental was originally to try a more fun cycle, but it made me think about the opportunities
 that lie in the more unconventional bicycles
 (Male, 36-45 years) 

23 users have over the past year borrowed a velomobile. The users report back that the velomobile is best suited for long distances over 20 km and runs well on wide bicycle lanes outside the city and that several users  would cycle more in the rain if they had a similar cycle. It is our questionnaire from the bike library document.

The use and experience of the velomobile:

  • 54% of the users have cycled between 20-50 km
  • 81% of the users have had a good and ok experience
  • 77% of the users experience the driveability as good and ok
  • 54% of users experience the safety level as “safe” and “very safe”

  • Protects well against wind, rain and drizzle
  • Is better suited to use on wide bike paths, since it can be difficult to pass other cyclists
  • Can be perceived as heavier and slower than expected, due to a lack of time to adapt to such a different cycle.  

The velomobile gives the user new transport options:

  • 45% of the users would cycle more in the rain
  • 24% of the users  would cycle more
  • 10% of the users  would ride longer

  • A third of borrowers are considering buying a similar cycle after trying a velomobile.
